We are very pleased to welcome three new members to the Oxford CCAI Lab. Dr Isobel Voysey and Vidminas Vizgirda are joining the UKRI CHAILD project and Boyin Yang is joining the IAA grant on Ethical AI for Children.

FamiData Hub: A Speculative Design Exploration with Families on Smart Home Datafication Dr Ge Wang, led the research on FamiData Hub during her last term in Oxford CCAI. The research investigates how children and families perceive the extensive data harvesting embedded in these smart homes and its manipulative impact on children.

On March 18, 2025, at the World Forum on the Future of Democracy, AI and Humankind, 5Rights Chair Baroness Beeban Kidron unveiled the Children & AI Design Code, a first practical initiative demanding designers of AI systems prioritise children’s rights and interests, not exploit them.

On 10-12 March, global experts, policymakers, and children gathered in Georgia to celebrate the the 35th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The General Comment No. 25 on children’s rights in relation to the digital environment was formally adopted by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child(UNCRC) in February (2021).

February 11 is the Safter Internet Day of 2025. As part of Data Privacy Day on January 28, Senior Researcher Dr Jun Zhao (Jun Z.) spoke to ITV about her research, describing how users’ online activity and data can be aggregated and used by scammers to create tailored privacy attacks.

We are very pleased to share that Oxford CCAI team has recently received two new research grants to boost our AI Ethical Design programme, jointly launched with FamStudio and Oxford Reuben College.

2025 begins with a landmark event hosted by Round Square, a partner non-profit organisation of Oxford CCAI. This Headmaster’s Symposium brought together around 150 School Heads in the audience from around 40 countries.

Launch of CHAILD – Children’s Agency In the age of AI: Leveraging InterDisciplinarity We are delighted to announce that we have received an award from the UKRI Cross-Disciplinary Response Mode to support our collaboration with philosophers from Oxford and learning scientists from UCL.

We cannot treat children as subjects of AI experimentation - as it increasingly becomes part of their childhood, we must ensure AI governance supports their rights and development needs, incorporating safety from the start.

We are incredibly excited to be part of Oxford’s newly launched AI in Education at Oxford University (AIEOU), led by Dr Sara Ratner, Professor Elizabeth Wonnacott and Professor Rebecca Williams.
